LEQEMBI® Infusion Therapy

About LEQEMBI® Infusion Therapy
LEQEMBI® is an FDA approved injectable treatment for Alzheimer';s disease. It worked by reducing amyloid plaques in the brain. It is one of the first medications designed to actually slow down he progression of Alzheimer's disease rather than just treating the symptoms. LEQEMBI® is a monoclonal antibody that binds to beta-amylpoid before plaque formation, helping to prevent the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain.
Condition treated by this therapy
LEQEMBI® is approved for early Alzheimer's disease with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia stage of the disease. This medication is specifically for people with confirmed amyloid pathology in the brain.
LEQEMBI® Price
The out-of-pocket LEQEMBI®price will vary depending on your insurance coverage. If you have questions about your coverage, contact your insurance provider.
No patient should go without necessary treatment due to financial limitations. If you have questions about financial assistance opportunities, contact a member of our Violet Health team.
What to Expect During LEQEMBI® Infusion Therapy
LEQEMBI® is administered as an intravenous infusion, typically infused over an hour once every 2 weeks.
Pre-treatment testing includes:
- MRI brain sans (LEQEMBI® requires four brain MRI scans prior to treatment)
- Testing for the APOE4 gene, which could increase your risk of side effects
- Medication review, especially blood thinners
Expect to get regular MRI scans to monitor for any changes in your brain. Treatment may slow disease progression by approximately 27% compared to no treatment.
LEQEMBI® Side Effects
LEQEMBI® reactions can include symptoms of Amyloid-Related Imagine Abnormalities (ARIA). About 22% of patients taking LEQEMBI® experienced ARIA in clinical trials. Other symptoms of LEQEMBI® include infusion-related reactions such as:
- Flu-like symptoms
- Chills
- Fever
- Nausea
- Face or mouth swelling
Watch out for symptoms of ARIA which can manifest as brain swelling and bleeding, a common problem to all plaque-targeting drugs. Risk is higher for people with APOE4 gene. Patients should not take LEQEMBI® if they have bleeding problems. Not recommended for those on blood thinners other than Aspirin.
