About INTRALIPID® Infusion Therapy

INTRALIPID® is a long-standing lipid emulsion that has been administered in more than 200 million infusions since its European approval in 1962. It is a 100% soybean oil-based emulsion that contains essential fatty acids including linoleic acid (44% to 62%) and alpha-linolenic acid (4% to 11%).

Conditions treated by this therapy

INTRALIPID® is indicated as a source of calories and essential fatty acids for adult and pediatric patients requiring parenteral nutrition (PN) and as a source of essential fatty acids for prevention of essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD).

It is specifically indicated in patients needing intravenous nutrition to supply energy and essential fatty acids, as well as for patients with essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD) who cannot maintain or restore a normal essential fatty acid pattern by oral intake.

INTRALIPID® Price

The cost of prescription medications can vary depending on your insurance coverage. If you're concerned about the price of your medication:

  • Contact your insurance provider to understand your coverage
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist about lower-cost alternatives
  • Check with the drug manufacturer about financial assistance programs
  • Explore patient assistance options if you're uninsured or underinsured

Remember, many resources exist to help patients access necessary medications. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you're struggling with medication costs. No patient should go without necessary treatment due to financial limitations. If you have questions about financial assistance opportunities, contact a member of our Violet Health team.

What to Expect During INTRALIPID® Infusion Therapy

INTRALIPID® is administered intravenously, with dosage depending on age, energy expenditure, clinical status, body weight, tolerance, ability to metabolize and eliminate lipids, and consideration of additional energy given to the patient.

Before your infusion, it is important to drink plenty of water and come to your appointment hydrated.

  1. Your dedicated Infusion nurse will check your vitals and review your medical history to check for improvements or potential side effects of your infusion therapy.
  2. Your nurse will begin your infusion and check in on you periodically during your treatment.
  3. After your infusion, your nurse will monitor you to ensure you do not have any complications or reactions to the infusion therapy.

INTRALIPID® Side Effects

The most common side effects reported with INTRALIPID® administration include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Back or chest pain
  • Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)
  • Slight temperature elevation

Serious adverse reactions can occur with rapid infusion of intravenous lipid emulsion in neonates and infants. Strict adherence to the recommended total daily dosage is important, and if poor clearance of fats occurs, the infusion should be stopped and medical evaluation started.

Parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) may progress to liver inflammation and damage caused by a buildup of fat in the liver with scarring and cirrhosis.
